Hail Damage is usually covered by insurance. It’s essential to know your policy and know if it is covered. Here are some explanations of your insurance policy and what you need to have to get your hail damaged repaired by the insurance company and the shop of your cho8ice.

Most of us are familiar with Collision insurance. This is the coverage that helps pay to repair, restore, or replace your car if it’s damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object, such as a fence or a tree, and it is moving.  If your car is paid off, collision is an optional coverage on your car insurance policy. This is where things get tricky. If your vehicle is paid off, you are only mandated to carry liability. At the same time, this is tempting. It is dangerous. If your car is damaged by you or mother-nature, you will not get money to replace it.

Liability car insurance or liability coverage, as it’s also known, helps pay for the costs of the other driver’s property and medical injuries if you are “at fault” in an accident, so if you crash into someone or something else.  Your insurance company will pay for the property damage and injuries to the covered limit; you determine your limit. Something to check on when you are getting a new policy, and make sure you have proper insurance limits, you may end up in a court case, with someone personally holding you financially responsible.

To be covered in a hail storm, you need to have comprehensive insurance. This is just one part of your policy. Comprehensive insurance is coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it’s stolen or damaged in an incident that’s not a collision. Sometimes called “other than collision,”  this coverage typically covers damage from mother nature or others. Examples are fire, vandalism, falling objects from the sky like a UFO, trees, or hail damage.

Your policy also determines rental car coverage, and there is no way to retroactively get it after you have had an accident or been involved in a hail storm and need it. You can add it to your policy, and it usually increases your monthly bill by $3-$5 per month. It is so valuable to have if you are in an accident. Rental cars for the length of your repair can add up to thousands of dollars. When you get a new policy, really read the terms and see precisely how much of a rental car they will really cover.

If you are reading this before your car is hit with hail, call your insurance company and make sure you have the proper coverage to pay for collision and rental car. If you don’t have coverage, remember that we can still fix your vehicle with no insurance involved, and you will just be responsible for the cost of repairs personally.
